Not sure where to start? A combination whetstone (medium and fine grit) handles most sharpening tasks for chisels and plane irons. Add a honing guide if you're new to freehand sharpening — it keeps the bevel angle consistent. A leather strop with honing compound gives a polished, razor-sharp edge as a final step. For hollow-ground edges, a slip stone reaches into gouges and carving tools that flat stones can't.
